Be a Better Leader by learning how to Coach ‘Cleanly’: A coaching approach for leaders to inspire creativity in your people

  • Date: Wednesday 22nd March 2023
  • Time: 9.30 am to 10.30am, UK time

As a people manager and influencer, the chances are that you often need to coach those around you, whether or not coaching is an official part of your job role. And you probably know that coaching is supposed to be non-directive and outcome led, allowing people to explore and discover their own solutions. In that way we inspire and empower those around us to be their best self and rise to the challenges that the situation and their role demands.

But this is easier said than done, especially when as a leader, others are likely to look to us to provide a solution. Plus, when you know the people and their circumstances inevitably you have your own opinion and beliefs about what’s happening and what would be useful. It’s hard to hold back on offering your ideas and suggestions. The trouble is, once we do so, we inadvertently extinguish the spark of creativity that could have come from that individual, who cannot escape from your viewpoint. Even when we think we are asking an ‘open’ question, our unconscious biases and beliefs are woven into the language we are using, and transmit our suggestions with no-one really noticing.

What happens when we truly support our people to explore what they really think, what they truly know about what’s going on and what needs to happen to achieve success?

This one-hour free webinar is offered as part of International Leadership Week 2023 #ILW23

We will cover the basics of ‘Clean Coaching’ – a coaching method that strips those beliefs and biases from your question so you can be ‘Clean’ in your approach and help your coaches gain insight and make sustainable changes for improvement. This approach incorporates Clean Language – a style of conversation that allows others person to explore their situation, without interruption or influence. In this way, their imagination is free to flourish and new ideas and understandings can emerge.

In this one-hour free webinar, you will hear from leading Clean Coaching expert Angela Dunbar:

  • How to start coaching conversations with a blank slate
  • How to encourage coachees to open up
  • Tapping into creative thinking
  • What to do when the coachee is stuck
  • Ending with a clear action plan – devised and owned 100% by a coachee motivated to achieve it

Clean Language and the Magic of Metaphor:

The class will cover:

  • How patterns of thinking shape our language
  • What is a metaphor and how to spot one
  • Key principles of a Clean approach to Coaching
  • Examples of Clean Language questions
  • A demonstration of Clean Language
  • Question and answer session

In this class you will learn how Clean Language can be used by coaches to enable clients to gain new perspectives and discover creative insights.

Developed by NZ Psychologist David Grove whilst working with victims of trauma, Clean Language provides a safe route into a client’s own internal wisdom contained within their non-conscious mind.

This is achieved through the exploration of the client’s own (often unconscious) use of metaphors to express their situation, self and goal.

Clean Coaching – Getting from A to B with “EK”:

The class will cover:

  • What is EK (Emergent Knowledge) and where did it come from?
  • How networks work and how change happens
  • The ‘small world’ framework that can hold a person stuck
  • How the tangible space around a coachee provides access to different ways of thinking
  • A demonstration of Clean Coaching with EK

In this session, Angela will briefly cover some of the theory on this technique explaining how it evolved from David Grove’s work in Clean Language and subsequently Space. We’ll look at how networks work in nature and consider our minds as a network. Then we’ll look at how the process of Emergent Knowledge and the principles of repeating particular questions in a certain way enables insght to emerge and change to happen.

Then, you will have the opportunity to listen to a live demonstration of one EK technique. You’ll be able to hear for yourself the key stages that a person is likely to move through before reaching a point of transformation, when the old way of thinking no longer applies and an ‘Ah ha’ moment reached.

You can ask questions along the way and get a real sense of how and why this technique works in a seemingly effortless and almost magical way, and witness the benefits it can bring to a client. And for you as a coach, learn a simple, but amazingly effective technique for helping your client shift perspectives.
